What do fates look like

Greek News. All Archaeology Art Charity Crime. By Gabi Ancarola. July 5, Circa Credit: Public Domain The Moirai, usually also known as the Fates of Greek mythology , stand for the idea of destiny in the world of the ancient Greeks. The Legends decided to destroy the Loom as that was the source of the Fates' godly power. Sara Lance , with help from Zari and Behrad Tarazi , were successful in killing Atropos and destroying the Loom but many of the Legends had to time-jump into the future to save their own lives from the resulting explosion.

For four months, Lachesis blamed Clotho for the death of their sister, causing Clotho to fall into a depression and to believe that free will was detrimental to all who demonstrated it.

Clotho stayed in a museum on display as the worst offender in history. Lachesis created the Fatewatch and turned Gideon into the new Loom; though the computer programming could not grant Lachesis magical power, it gave her power over how humanity ran its daily life. Meanwhile, Astra, who was aboard the Waverider , wondered if she was betraying her destiny; she no longer wanted to resurrect her mother and she was disloyal to the being who raised her to be a Fate.

The Legends retrieved Clotho and talked to her, trying to get her back from her brainwashing, while Astra confronted Lachesis about her upbringing. Lachesis revealed that she was more interested in having a third Fate and regaining her powers than actually having a daughter.

This cut the last tie the hurt Astra had with the Fates and she officially joined the Legends. Clotho was convinced by Lita , who would not have existed without her father's act of free will, that freedom was good and Clotho decided that Lachesis was wrong. In other versions, they are said to have other mothers such as Ananke. Nevertheless, they had powers which made even the almighty Zeus fear.

Each of the three fates had different tasks. Sometimes, the Fates were symbolized by time: Atropos-- the past, Clotho-- the present, and Lachesis-- the future GreekMythology.

In the artwork, Destiny , there appears to be unidentified figures who can be assumed as mortals since if they were goddesses, they would have been identified. Many people may just assume that these mortals are random figures who are just added into the artwork for no real reason and do not serve great significance, however, I believe that Mowbray was trying to portray something that has a deeper meaning.

They even appear to be working alongside the Fates. I also believe that Mowbray intentionally incorporated the two mortals into the places where they are. The two mortals appear to be standing near Clotho-- who is sometimes represented as the present, and Lachesis-- who is sometimes represented as the future. This could be because people are often focused on their present and their future.

Furthermore, the mortals seem to be looking towards Atropos-- who is sometimes represented as the past, just like how people look back at their past in order to shape their present and their future. This perspective of the artwork means a lot to me.

It would all just seem meaningless if I was one of the mortals who is being treated like a puppet by the Fates. It would be so much better if I had control over my own destiny through my own choices and consequences. I believe Mowbray was thinking the same thing which is why he created the artwork the way it is-- mortals working alongside the Fates.

Mortals are capable of shaping their own destiny. Works Cited:. Accessed 29 July The Fates, or in Greek, the Morai, are three mythic figures of immense power. This depiction speaks to not only the power dynamics of patriarchal societies, while the Fates engagement, or lack of, with their work leads the viewer to ponder their autonomy in the fabric of the universe. Women in patriarchal societies are constantly at the mercy of how men, and thus society as a whole, view them.

Dates make seemingly mundane Tuesday exciting. Dates take a little courage to explore. Dates offer something new and something familiar.

Dates are good for strangers or couples. Dates are great with dinner or dessert. Dates are fun. And you know what else is fun? The fact that I could be talking about a romantic outing with another human being or a small fruit that grows on a tree. Let's get to it then.
