I have UV filters that see no use because IMO they are just another source for distortion or flare etc That being said If you really want to get a filter, look at Hoya ProD1. The does not need slim filters.
Who ever told you that doesn't know what they are talking about. EDIT: As for any optical advantage, forget it. There is no UV filter or any other protection filter that will give you an optical advantage. The is prone to flare under harsh conditions, and that will become worse with any filter installed.
I hardly ever bother with the hood, it's just too thin to provide much protection. But I definitely don't stick a 'protective' filter on it. As Mike says, the is already terrible for flare, why make it even worse by sticking a filter in front of it?
Frank Hollis - Retired mass spectroscopist Give a man a fish and he'll eat for a day. Teach a man to fish and he'll complain about the withdrawal of his free fish entitlement. Gear Website. No optical advantages to be had with UV filters. They won't vignette. Thanks all for the insight. This is great stuff. I'm usually very careful with any gear I own, so am thinking hard about the no filter and using the lens hood route.
The paranoid part of me says, just one scratch and I might regret it. Say I were to get a filter, and since as mwsowsun mentioned that the is prone to flare, I should only be considering a non-slim, multi-coated filter correct? This is all making a lot more sense now. I thought filters cut down on things like flares, but it's actually the opposite, which is much more logical.
That site is amazing. Thanks a ton. It did not vignette, and I noticed no additional flare issues at all. Also, if I don't have the capability to hold my camera still enough for HDR shots, I just use a graduated ND to get a preferred exposure when the sky blows out highlights.
Of course, that can be attempted on photoshop but not easily because you won't retain the correct color saturation. Anyhow, I would personally say it's a better mid-ranged lens.
Nikon's ultra wide is sharper and has a lot less distortion which is pretty important for professional shoots like weddings. I personally love wide angle distortion and that's part of what attracted me to this lens. It works well for a mid range.
I use a CPL with this lens with no issues. A couple of examples with the CPL attached 11mm :. All a CPL does to wide angles is create a gradient if you are facing a bad angle from the sun. A linear polarizer is best with a wide angle because it can be adjusted more easily without a gradient than a CPL.
Keep in mind that you loose autofocus capabilities with a linear polarizer. Mark Frost 9 years ago. Unless, of course, you include the sun in the frame. But even a strong ND grad won't help you there. Do you also have an example of a dessert or beach in bright sunlight sun in or just outside the frame with mountain, or dark sea backdrop and clear sky? A nikon D one of the best DSLR's when it comes to dynamic range gives you around 15 stops f Dynamic range A human ey, depending on the person, between 20 and 24 stops max.
I estimate that anything over 12 stops at the image plane is pretty difficult to achieve in practise. So it really doesn't matter what SBR is in front of the camera, as long as you don't include a very bright point source against a much darker background - the sun for instance.
My estimate was reached by the following: 1. Light reflected from walls of camera dark chamber gets totally diffused and uniformly reaches shadow areas of image. That works out to 0. And that's not taking into account any lens flare or excess image circle outside of the frame area!
Be sensible CPM. Last edited: Jul 5, For this a combination of ND grad and in post lifting the darker shades a bit , i feel is more effective and achievable than just relying on post processing. I set a challenging request whre a dynamic range of the scene itself is high not uncommon for a sunset situation , to show that even the modern DSLR;s like the one the OP uses need a bit of help in these type of conditions ,,, No current camera enables you to catch that type of scene the way your eyes register it, and no current affordaqble equipment is able to present it either …
