Or feel that since summer will be winding down soon you might not want to replace your pads twice this year, there are a few things you can do to deodorize your evaporative cooler that may help reduce odors. Of course, there are preventative steps you can take to make sure the odor is less likely to return next year by taking the appropriate steps to maintain your cooler at the end of the summer. Replacing Your Swamp Cooler Pads We always recommend changing the pads once a year with the exception of Mastercool swamp cooler pads prior to the start of each summer.
The U. Environmental Protection Agency states that mold growth inside a home can cause a variety of health problems, specifically mentioning swamp coolers as one cause. People with mold allergies may experience skin or eye irritation, nasal congestion, fevers or wheezing. Some common brands of cooling pads are the Aspen and Cellulose. If you have Aspen cooling pads , you should change them at the beginning of each season or sooner, depending on the mineral deposits built up on the pad.
Cellulose, or CelDek, pads last longer and require changing every 3 to 5 years. So how do you get rid of the fish smell and clean a cooler? After thoroughly rinsing the cooler , drop one tablespoon of liquid dish soap and a quarter to half cup of baking soda into the cooler. Add a generous spray of water and scrub using a green dish scrubbing pad.
As the air flows through the dampened saw dust ,it slowly causes tannin[rotting wood fibers] the to build up in the saw dust until it time to change it out for more dry new saw dust. If you wait too long , you may smell the fish fling from your ' swamp cooler '. Combine three cups of white distilled vinegar with water in a bucket, and dip a wire brush into the mixture to scrub the louvers venting and drain pan. Scrub the fan blades, outside unit, water float and around the pump, if needed, removing excess calcium with the brush.
Rinse all items with clean water. Use a capful of your favorite fabric softener. To condition new aspen pads: New Aspen pads don't always absorb water very well, because of the natural oils present in the wood fibers. Wash the cooler pads with a citrus-based cleaner, and rinse thoroughly before putting them in the cooler. Add a cup of vinegar to the cooler pan and let the vinegar cycle through the system for up to an hour.
This will eliminate odors, mold, mildew and some corrosion, calcium deposits and other types of build-up. Repeat one to two times a season or as needed. You might think of using bleach to clean the concrete floors after removing the urine-stained carpeting, but bleach won't kill the odor.
It simply disinfects. Bleach is harmful to breathe, and it's toxic for your pets, too. How to Clean an Air Cooler Unplug the air cooler from the wall socket. Open the air cooler and remove the air filter and the water basin. Fill a sink full of warm water and 1 tsp.
Rinse the air filter off with clean water to remove any dust or debris. Wipe down the exterior of the air cooler with a damp cloth. Mold, bacteria, and algae spores arrive via air currents and thrive in this damp environment. The most common reason for a fishy odor is usually bacteria or mold build-up and microscopic algae.
All of these come from spores in the air that find their way on air currents into the unit. Cleaning the unit will usually remove the fishy odor resulting from the growth of these spores.
The second reason for a fishy odor could be the outside air that is being drawn into your cooler. If your unit is scrupulously clean, walk outside and check for any vents around your cooler.
Look at your own and neighboring buildings. It may take a few days to determine where the odor is emanating. A fishy smell could be coming from a far-away vent that only runs once a day, for instance. Attempt to relocate or redirect the offending vent. You may need a contractor to help you, or it may be as simple as adding an extension to redirect the foul air away from your air intake.
If redirecting or relocating a vent are not options, try filtering out incoming odors. Carbon filters can stop odors from entering your home.
This type of simple carbon filter can be cut-to-fit and installed on the air-intake side of your cooler. See carbon filters on Amazon. Unfortunately, the blessing of potable water is also a possible source of fishy odors. Public water supplies are often treated for safety using a combination of chlorine and ammonia. If you know the fishy smell is not coming from your unit, see if your tap water actually smells fishy.
Additionally, corroded plumbing can allow natural metals like barium or cadmium into your pipes and cause a fishy smell in your water. This can be difficult or simple, depending on how your cooler receives water. If you simply add water to a reservoir, you will need to switch to distilled water. However, if your cooler is hooked directly to your water supply, you can install an inline filter. If you have an assembly such as the picture below, you can install an inline filter on the tubing.
You may be able to do this yourself with a plumbing book borrowed from the library. You can modify these types of water intake systems to accept a filter.
