Naturally, I was horrified when I read this. Instantly I thought of my dogs and could almost hear them whimpering. The language that Camus uses is so matter of fact, that it makes the intensity of what is being said all the more effective.
Why would he do this to his only companion? One that is so sick? What a miserable existence for this poor dog. Despite the initial shock, I kept reading, not expecting much more to come from Old Salamano. Meursault tells Marie about the old man and the dog and she laughs, and then the story promptly shifts to something else.
Surely I am not the only one who cares about this dog? I found myself wondering what it could possibly mean and why I was so affected by something that seemed to be such a small part in a developing narrative.
Salamano explains that his dog has been lost and suddenly, his gruff exterior begins to fade. If only somebody would take him in. Suddenly, I began to feel different about Salamano. Maybe he really did care about the dog, and just had a terrible way of showing it, as sometimes we all do. He looked at me in silence. His bed creaked. And from the peculiar little noise coming through the partition, I realized he was crying. Before, I called myself a sensitive reader, and this is where that is clear.
To me, the tragedy of this novel was the core of it. Yet unknowingly, he gives it to the reader by explaining with such plain, straight forward words, the loss of his mother, and most effectively to me, the relationship between a lonely old man and his sick, dying, and lost dog.
Meursault reveals that Salamano had gotten his dog after his wife, whom he had an unhappy marriage with, dies. I cannot emphasize the effects that this last sentence had on me.
